An inn that conveys authentic
Onomichi culture to the present day

Nishiyama Bekkan was an inn located in Onomichi , a town where the mountains meet the sea. The town was once a gathering place of the Murakami Pirates who protected the Seto Inland Sea routes and the shipbuilders who built up Onomichi’s economy. These pirates and shipbuilders boasted a culture and wisdom that rivaled that of the daimyo feudal lords. The historic Nishiyama Bekkan has been revived as Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama, a traditional ryokan inn where you can experience authentic Onomichi culture.

Inheriting the history of
Nishiyama Bekkan

Opened in 1943, Nishiyama Bekkan was a long-established ryokan that was beloved as a guest house in Onomichi. Inheriting this history, Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama continues to use not only the building but also the furniture, light fixtures, tea ceremony utensils, hanging scrolls, and tableware. Some items are preserved in their original form, while some are altered for use. But they are all cherished. For example, wood that was once used as tokonoma alcoves has been turned into room keys, and roof tiles have been reborn as design materials for the entrance. We hope that these efforts will help to convey Onomichi culture and connect the skills of Japanese artisans to the future.

Once-in-a-lifetime cuisine that will remain engraved in your memory

Savor a once-in-a-lifetime feast prepared right in front of you by incorporating French cuisine into Onomichi’s food culture. The dishes include lavish use of ingredients nurtured by the four seasons of the Seto Inland Sea and first-class Japanese products once brought to Onomichi by historic Kitamae-bune ships. Sake and wine pairings are also recommended.

About Dinner

Our cuisine includes our chef’s specialties, items from the Seto Inland Sea, and dishes that lavishly incorporate first-class Japanese products that were historically brought to Onomichi from the north by Kitamae-bune ships. After ordering a prix fixe meal as a base, you can also add your favorite dishes from the à la carte menu. Enjoy your night at Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama to your heart’s content.
Pair your dishes with our special wine, sake from Hiroshima Prefecture, and other tantalizing selections.

About Breakfast

The ultimate nourishing simple meal

Our breakfast dishes include specially selected fragrant rice with uniform grains cooked in an earthenware pot as well as fine-quality salted, lightly dried fish, a specialty of Onomichi. We aim to provide the ultimate nourishing simple meal that makes the quality of ingredients stand out, including citrus fruits from the Seto Inland Sea, seasonal vegetables, and eggs freshly gathered in the morning. Finish savoring your meal with our dashi chazuke, featuring rice with dashi and green tea.

(1) On-premises clothing

This clothing can be worn at the Korin Lounge, Restaurant, Nishiyama Bunko and other public spaces. Two sizes (medium and large) are available. The sleeves, hem, collar, and other parts of the clothing can be folded and arranged as you like.

(2) Nightwear

Please use these one-size-fits-all nightwear when you are resting.

(3) On-premises slippers

These slippers can be worn for the Korin Lounge, Restaurant, strolls in the garden, and other purposes. Two sizes are available.

Room equipment/items

The following equipment/items can be used freely in each guest room.

(1) Humidifying air purifier

Water for humidification is pre-filled in the tank. Please refill the tank with water from the sink when you need additional water.

(2) Safe

There is a safe for use in the guest rooms.
